Meet Thoi

THOI

I was born in Vietnam after the fall of the South Vietnamese government. My father had fled the country to avoid persecution. Still, my mother considered my birth a good omen and named me “Thoi,” which means “lucky.” My family, who put their confidence in me even at such an early age, have always been an inspiration to me. My father, a clothing manufacturer, and my mother, a fashion designer, taught me to blend colors, shapes, and textures and to see the beauty and potential in everything.

At the age of thirteen, I moved in with my uncle, a sculptor, who had a studio in the basement of his home in Washington state. I’d watch him take natural objects – wood, clay, and stone – and peel away the layers to reveal what only he knew would lie underneath. For me this was like being part of an exciting secret. I’m reminded of my uncle when I create a new piece of jewelry; I try to let the raw materials present themselves naturally, almost as if they are whispering to me.

After a couple of years in college studying the things I was supposed to study – the things that traditionally bring a person success, such as international law – my uncle’s voice started speaking softly to me. It told me to follow my heart and pursue my gift, and though it was quiet at first, it grew in persistence and fervor. I began to study art, first in Italy and then at the School of Visual Arts in New York, before rounding out my education at Otis Parsons in Los Angeles. My uncle’s voice was always in the back of my mind.

Watching my uncle pass away in February of 2008 was difficult. ALS had wracked his body and confined him to a wheelchair in his last years. Suffering from tremors and unable to work on sculpture, he resorted to his first passion, composing music. His smile, in spite of his physical trauma, encompassed the most important thing he had given me – the courage to step into an unsteady, creative field, and the knowledge that it is only doing what I love most that will bring me happiness.

All the designs in our collection are created with hand-cut, individually selected, natural gems. Because the stones are chosen for their unique natural beauty, they may vary slightly in shape, size, and color. I personally select the stones we work with, some of which are cut especially for me. Depending on the design and the size of the order, selected artisans who share my vision of quality and beauty, working under my direction, contribute to the handcrafting of the pieces.

We unveil two collections per year, for the warmer and cooler seasons, and each of our pieces is made to order to suit the mood and complexion of each individual woman.

We take pride in our craftsmanship, so each piece is guaranteed. We will fix or replace any piece found to be imperfect, and will accommodate any reasonable request for special service, whether it is a custom piece for a wedding or a replacement for a lost earring.

Since the founding of my company in 2000, we have worked with top catalog retailers, such as Red Envelope and Sundance, among others. Our designs have been featured in such magazines as InStyle, Cosmopolitan, and Shape, as well as popular television programs (“Days of Our Lives,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Weeds”). Many wonderful, successful women wear our pieces, including popular celebrities … and YOU!
